President Trump is keeping Randy Berry, the U.S. Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons. (The “I” is for Intersex.) This is a big deal because Trump is keeping this position at the state department AND retaining Obama’s appointment.
Berry, who is gay and married with kids, has twenty-four years of diplomatic experience. In the past Berry has spoken out on behalf of the United States again the oppression of gays by other countries.
An article in Foreign Policy notes that Berry was retained despite the purging of other political envoys and ambassadors like the Special Envoy for Climate Change. The article also notes that conservative groups like the Family Research Council have been calling for Berry’s removal. But Trump has stood firm, with speculation Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner have played a role in keeping the envoy.
Berry apparently lacks a twitter account, but an article by him describing his work is posted at humanrights.gov.
